Out on the Outer Banks

May 7-9, 2017

Edenton is an excellent jumping off place to see the Outer Banks.  I did a loop, going through Point Harbor, down to Oregon Inlet, up to Roanoke Island to visit the Fort Raleigh Site and learn about the lost colony, through the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge and back to Edenton.  The area is packed with views and history - enough for a week although I only stayed two days.

Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills is the site of the first flight, made by the Wright Brothers and there is an excellent Memorial there.

I didn't drive all the way down to Cape Hatteras, instead I visited the Bodie Island Lighthouse

No birds, but still pretty.  The lighthouse is behind me

I stayed at the Oregon Inlet campground within the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, an open area with no electricity and cold showers (except for the ADA shower which had heat.  Sometimes it pays to snoop around)

A short trails over the dunes takes you right to the beach.  Plenty of seashells and sand for miles and miles.

Thankfully the dunes cut out the sound of the little Airstream and the generator they ran ALL DAY so they could watch television.  So you go to a spectacular location with beaches, birds, waves, wind, and everything glorious and you sit in your little trailer to watch tv.

Some people . . .
